This is SCARY! No no, it's sick. Coach House Press is about to be knocked down to make way for another U of T residency. Here's John Barber's excellent article in Saturday's Globe and Mail. Time to call Mayor Miller!

thanks for posting about this Catherine. I remember being taken on a little tour of Coach House Press when I was a kid. The byzantine piles of paper, stacks of culture piling up and moving through that place are/were inspiring. It's an exemplary role model for Canadian small and indie-press activity. I find it really sad that it takes a major threat like this to remind us that these DIY style institutions are not to be taken for granted, even if they've been around for years and years. Publishing is hard hard work. Indie publishing can break your spirit, but the existence of Coach House has always made it seem doable, they've set the bar and they've stayed alive and they've been a bastion of strength in a tiny, tipsy trade.
